About Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine forms a major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and together with Acupuncture makes up a very significant portion of the treatment options available to TCM.

The underlying principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are very different from traditional Western notions about health, illness and the workings of the body. Studies have shown Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) to be successful in treating a range of disorders, particularly gynaecological,  gastrointestinal and musculo-skeletal disorders and others.

Herbal medicine is used by almost all cultures throughout the world, but the most well-known are Chinese herbal medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and Western herbal medicine.

Types of Chinese Herbal Medicine Prescriptions

Chinese herbal medicines come in many different forms including pills, capsules, powders and teas. Most commonly, in Australia, you will probably be prescribed pills, capsules or powders as many patients will not tolerate the taste of the teas nor will they take the time to brew them.

It is far easier and more convenient to swallow a pill or capsule than to spend half an hour brewing up a traditionally made concoction.

In either case, the prescription you will be given will be specifically designed for you and your health problem.

Chinese herbal medicine is a safe and effective form of treatment when prescribed by a qualified doctor of Chinese medicine. On rare occasions, there is a possibility of side effects, especially in the initial stage of treatment. Usually however, side effects resolve after a few days and will not be experienced again for the remainder of treatment. Sometimes, a prescription may need to be changed if the side effects do continue, however, this is not usually an on going or lasting problem.

What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?

A qualified Chinese herbalist uses a carefully selected combination of herbs to create personalised formulas based on an individual’s presentation and Chinese medicine diagnosis. These formulas may be adjusted over time as your health needs change.

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognises that people experiencing similar symptoms may have very different underlying patterns of imbalance. For this reason, two individuals with the same health condition may receive completely different herbal prescriptions.

A Personalised Approach to Healthcare

At Kurrajong Natural Medicine Centre, no two herbal prescriptions are exactly the same.

Your consultation may include:

  • A detailed health history
  • Discussion of your current symptoms and concerns
  • Review of lifestyle, diet and stress factors
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment methods
  • Development of an individualised herbal prescription
  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustments where appropriate

This personalised approach allows treatment recommendations to evolve as your circumstances change.

Chinese herbal medicine is often used alongside other Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies, including acupuncture, moxibustion, dietary advice and lifestyle recommendations.

Conditions Commonly Supported with Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Digestive Health

Digestive health is one of the most common reasons people seek Chinese herbal medicine in the Hawkesbury region.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, digestion is closely related to the function of the Spleen and Stomach systems, which are responsible for transforming food into energy and supporting overall vitality.

When these systems are not functioning optimally, people may experience symptoms such as bloating, irregular bowel movements, abdominal discomfort, or a general feeling of heaviness or low energy after eating.

Chinese herbal medicine is traditionally used to support digestive balance by addressing underlying patterns of disharmony rather than focusing only on isolated symptoms. During your consultation, your practitioner will consider your full health picture, including diet, stress levels, sleep, and lifestyle factors, to develop a tailored herbal prescription.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Stress and Emotional Wellbeing

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views  emotional wellbeing as the harmonious circulation of vital energy, or Qi, throughout interconnected organ systems. Rather than separating mind and body, TCM treats emotional and physical health as an integrated whole.

Many people seek Chinese herbal medicine when experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty switching off.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, emotional wellbeing is closely connected to the Liver system, which is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body.

When this system becomes disrupted, individuals may experience symptoms such as irritability, tension, poor sleep, digestive changes, or a sense of being “stuck” or overwhelmed.

Chinese herbal medicine is traditionally used to support emotional balance and resilience. Rather than targeting symptoms in isolation, treatment is tailored to the individual’s overall pattern of presentation, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health

Chinese herbal medicine has been traditionally used to support women’s health through all stages of life, including menstrual cycles, reproductive health, perimenopause, and menopause.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, women’s health is closely related to the balance of Blood, Qi, Yin, and Yang within the body. When these are not in harmony, symptoms such as irregular cycles, PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome), mood changes, fatigue, or discomfort may occur.

Treatment is always individualised. Your practitioner will take into account your full health history and current symptoms to develop a tailored herbal prescription aimed at supporting overall balance and wellbeing.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Fatigue and Low Energy

Persistent fatigue is one of the most common concerns people present with in clinical practice.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fatigue can arise from a range of underlying patterns, including imbalances in energy production, sleep disruption, stress, or prolonged periods of physical or emotional strain.

Chinese herbal medicine is traditionally used to support vitality and restore balance by addressing the underlying constitutional patterns contributing to low energy. Treatment is individualised and may be adjusted over time depending on your response and overall health picture.

Supportive Care During Cancer Recovery

Some individuals choose Chinese herbal medicine as part of their cancer supportive care approach during or after conventional cancer treatment.

At Kurrajong Natural Medicine Centre, care is focused on supporting overall wellbeing during what can be a physically and emotionally demanding time. This may include supporting energy levels, digestion, sleep, and general vitality.

Each prescription is individually tailored, taking into account medical history, current treatments, and overall health status. Where appropriate, care may be coordinated alongside other healthcare providers to ensure an integrated and safe approach.

This area of practice is particularly meaningful in our clinic due to both professional experience in Traditional Chinese Medicine and personal lived experience of navigating cancer treatment and recovery.

About Your Chinese Merbal Medicine Practitioner

Chinese herbal medicine consultations at Kurrajong Natural Medicine Centre are provided by Danny Siegenthaler, a qualified practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine who has been serving the Hawkesbury community since establishing the clinic together with his wife, Susan, in 2009.

Danny’s approach combines the traditional principles of Chinese Herbal Medicine with a modern, patient-centred understanding of health and wellbeing. He believes that effective healthcare begins with understanding the individual, not just their symptoms. Every consultation is tailored to the person’s unique health history, current concerns, lifestyle factors, and wellbeing goals, allowing herbal prescriptions to be carefully selected and adjusted as needed.

For over 40 years, Danny has worked with people seeking support for a wide range of health concerns, including digestive health, stress and emotional wellbeing, fatigue, women’s health, chronic health conditions, and healthy ageing. His clinical approach focuses on identifying the underlying patterns of imbalance described in Traditional Chinese Medicine and developing personalised treatment strategies that support the body’s natural capacity for balance and recovery.

What makes Danny’s perspective unique is the combination of professional expertise and personal experience. Following his own diagnosis and treatment for colorectal cancer, he gained firsthand insight into the challenges that many patients and families face throughout diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and ongoing health management. This experience deepened his appreciation of the importance of compassionate, supportive care and the need for patients to feel heard, understood, and empowered throughout their health journey.

Danny has a particular interest in supportive cancer care, helping individuals maintain their wellbeing during and after conventional medical treatment. His personal experience enables him to relate to many of the physical and emotional challenges that can accompany serious illness, while his professional training allows him to provide thoughtful, individualised care within a broader healthcare framework.

Today, Danny welcomes patients from Kurrajong, Bowen Mountain, Richmond, North Richmond, Windsor, Kurrajong Heights, Bilpin, Pitt Town, and throughout the Hawkesbury region who are seeking personalised Chinese Herbal Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine care.
